A year after hitting bottom

The presistant aches and pains from old injuries were my excuse for not exercising. Not exercising led to more aches and pains, less activity, weight gain, and weakness. In a weakened state illnesses are likely to be more frequent and protracted.

I got pneumonia and bronchitis, and my asthma flared up. My blood oxygen absorption rate fell to the low 80s. My heart had to work harder to get the oxygen I needed. As a result my blood pressure rose, and my resting pulse was twenty beats per minute higher. I was listless and constantly tired.

My cardiologist was concerned that I may have had a silent heart attack, so he conducted a series of tests.  I passed. That was almost a year ago, the bottom of a negative cycle. They say you have got to hit rock bottom before you commit to making a change.

Since that time I have changed my eating habits. I have not missed a strength training session regardless of the aches and pains. Funny thing is, the exercise made the aches and pains go away. Pain-free, I was able to add other activities. I began biking a couple times a week.

Fourteen years of positive changes

I work out of our Austin Personal Training location, and I was talking to one of our New Orleans personal trainers a few years back. I asked her why there was an influx of business when we hadn’t been doing any promotions, really no marketing of any kind outside of our internet presence. I was heartened to hear her response. She said, “People are starting to know of us in the community. I think we now have an established reputation”.

More than a decade ago we asked our clients if they would submit a short testimonial about their experience at our New Orleans location. The result was almost 40 testimonials, 30 of them from doctors.  We appreciate those votes of confidence and all the other testimonials made in subsequent years.

Our clients and our trainers are like a big family that continues to grow. Our facility is a special inviting place where clients look forward to coming.

I received an email from someone requesting Amy [pictured] to be her trainer. Amy told me that person had read a review of her on our Kelly Personal Training Yelp page. I checked the page; there were 15 reviews.

I reflected back 10 years to when we first opened – no reviews, no Amy, no other trainers, just two clients, and not near enough income to make the rent. It was just my dog Stella and me. It is gratifying to see how far we have come.

Kelly Personal Training in Austin now has nine trainers, two dogs Stella and Bella and an expanding client base. Our other facility, New Orleans Personal Training, is thriving as well.

Why they stay

It helps to have good trainers. In a recent blog post it was estimated that between our two Kelly Personal Training facilities, Austin Fitness Training and at New Orleans Personal Training, we had surpassed a quarter million training sessions. In another reoccurring blog post titled What Clients Are Saying we highlight the progress that our clients have made. Trainers made that happen.

The fitness business is a revolving door for trainers and clients as well. Only the good trainers manage keep a longstanding clientele and make a permanent go of it in the fitness industry.

Getting your life back

Chiseled rock-hard abs, a powerful svelte body, an easy athletic grace, and a head-turning physical presence - if you got it you got it if you don’t there are things you can do to work in that direction, but there is no guarantee you will get there.  The combination of uncompromising hard work, dietary discipline, and most importantly having the right parents (genetics) are essential.  As appealing as the above sounds I have come to the conclusion that there are far more important benefits that proper exercise brings.

Increasing bone density at age 60

Recently one of our clients brought in a cookie cake in gratitude for John Shafer, one of our trainers, and a card shown here that says it all.  It is results like these that really make our work rewarding. Debra was more than two standard deviations of away from the ideal bone density of a 25 year old.  In the time she began training her bone density went from being more than two standard deviations away from ideal to slightly more than one standard deviation away from ideal. While she still slightly in osteopenia, she is going against the trend of decreasing bone density that is common for people her age.  

Debra will be 60 soon.  Her regimen: she takes calcium supplements and vitamin D3, strength trains one a week for 30 minutes, and walks daily. She has lost 20 pounds. 

Our bones adapt to physical stress and are constantly remodeling themselves. If you expose the body and the bones to weight-bearing exercise the body and bones will adapt and become stronger.

Memories of a Broken Vertebra

I was watching Brazil versus Columbia when Brazilian Soccer player Neymar went down. At first I thought, “Oh boy, more flopping”. When they were carrying him off the field I saw the pain he was in, and it did not surprise me to learn that Neymar broke a vertebra. I broke a vertebra in my back 40 years ago.

My recovery was pretty straight forward – rest, pain meds, and a brace. The most difficult for me was sleeping. Sleeping on the floor was my only relief from the pain. I slept on the floor for years after that.

Years later I developed back pain that stayed with me for the better part of two years. Nothing gave me relief. I did everything I could to relieve the pain – new bed, swimming, getting rid of my chair at work, no long trips in the car, and standing instead of sitting during the night school classes I was attending. Exercise seemed to make it worse.

The Olympics are just around the corner. It got me to thinking. Not everyone can be the best in the world, but they can do some surprising things. Some of our clients from our New Orleans and Austin locations:

Helen (New Orleans) 74 had both knees, both hips, and a partial shoulder replaced. She was a very active tennis player when she was younger. Strength training was the one form of exercise she enjoyed doing at 74.

Darcy (New Orleans) was given the green light to work out during her entire pregnancy. She really did. She worked out on a Thursday and had her baby the following Monday.

Sylvia (Austin) worked out with us until she past at the age of 95.

Strength training, compounding the benefits

Strength training enables you to engage in other activities more often and longer than had you not strength trained. You'll to enjoy life more and play longer and more often. Additonally, You will suffer less injuries. Engaging in activities longer and more often compounds the benefits derived from strength training creating a virtuous cycle.

Examples:

Carole lived with constant back pain. Her back pain disappeared shortly after she began strength training. Three years later she was still going strong attending dance classes with people half her age. The additional activity of dance classes contributed positively to her health as well.
